Hydration Tips for Reptiles
Why is soaking an effective way to hydrate? Let’s dive into the basics of how reptiles process water. In nature, animals typically obtain water through three primary sources: direct drinking, moisture within their food (such as vegetables or prey), and metabolic water produced within their bodies during digestion.
However, reptiles have a unique advantage. They can absorb water through a fourth pathway influenced by a hormone called Arginine Vasotocin. This hormone stimulates water reabsorption via the cloaca, including water from urine. This process moves water from the cloacal opening into the large intestine and cecum, where it is pulled into the body through specialized channels known as aquaporins.
Many owners are unaware of this physiological trait, which is why veterinarians often recommend short, daily soaking sessions. Beyond hydration, soaking also provides the added benefit of stimulating better bowel movements and excretion.
