The physiological impact of nutrients on the body—both in health and illness—is significant, making a deeper understanding of these substances essential. In the rabbit market, there are approximately three major brands producing supplements for specific illnesses. However, for other exotic species, the variety is even greater; for instance, Exotic Nutrition offers products tailored to various clinical needs across multiple species.
This article focuses specifically on supplements designed for use during illness in rabbits, excluding recovery powders and pellets which have been discussed previously. These supplements are intended for daily consumption to support target organs during illness and improve overall health compared to receiving no supplementation at all. Key brands include Oxbow, Randolph, and EmerAid/Lafeber. While each brand offers various products, we will highlight those most commonly used for kidney and liver support.
Kidney Support (Renoprotective)
A primary example is Oxbow Natural Science Urinary Support. Similarly, Randolph HerbalTx Silybum marianum (Milk Thistle) also focuses on kidney health, though they utilize different herbal extracts:
Oxbow: Utilizes Cranberry extract, Dandelion leaf, Astragalus root, and Pumpkin seed.
Randolph: Focuses on Milk Thistle extract (targeting both kidney and liver) and Randolph HerbalTx Macleaya cordata (Plume Poppy), which contains opioids that benefit both organs.
Key Herbal Ingredients and Their Functions:
Cranberry Extract: While not directly affecting the kidneys, it provides indirect support by preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs) and reducing bacteria like E. coli and H. pylori. Its mild acidity helps reduce calcium oxalate stones.
Astragalus Root: A staple in traditional medicine, it acts as a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It aids in anti-aging, cellular repair, and immune system enhancement by increasing interferon production and telomere length.
Pumpkin Seed: Helps relieve muscle spasms and pain within the urinary system.
Dandelion Leaf: A natural diuretic high in mannitol. It is useful for flushing the system but requires caution; its high potassium content could lead to hyperkalemia if used alongside potassium-sparing diuretics. It also aids the liver in detoxification, though it may interact with drugs metabolized by the liver (e.g., glucuronidation pathway).
Milk Thistle (Silymarin): Renowned for over 2,000 years, its active components (Silymarin, Silybin, and Flavonolignans) promote kidney cell repair by increasing protein and nucleic acid synthesis. Research shows it can reduce albumin excretion (protecting kidney function) and shield the kidneys from oxidative damage caused by toxins like carbon tetrachloride ($CCl_4$) or drugs like Diclofenac.
Liver Support (Hepatoprotective)
The liver acts as the body’s primary filter, neutralizing toxins before they are excreted. Therefore, "detoxification" support is vital to prevent cellular damage.
Glutathione: The "master antioxidant," produced with the help of Vitamin E and Selenium, and composed of three amino acids: Cysteine, Glycine, and Glutamic acid.
Milk Thistle: Research highlights Silymarin’s role in assisting Liver Detoxification Phases 1 and 2. In humans, it is used to treat acute hepatitis and cirrhosis. In animals, it reduces liver fibrosis, inhibits inflammatory markers, and boosts natural glutathione levels.
Macleaya cordata (Plume Poppy): Contains Quaternary Benzophenanthridine Alkaloids (QBA) and Protopine Alkaloids (PA). Recognized by the EFSA as a feed additive, it has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Some studies suggest it may inhibit liver cancer growth via the $PI3K/Akt$ signaling pathway without being toxic to healthy cells.
Comprehensive Formulation
These products are rarely just herbal extracts. They often include:
Glucosamine and Omega fatty acids.
Prebiotics for gut health.
Timothy Hay base to ensure appropriate fiber levels for herbivores.
Conclusion
The liver and kidneys process everything from metabolic waste and pathogens to medications and environmental pollutants. Using herbal extracts alongside traditional medicine can enhance organ efficiency and safety. Especially during illness, liver and kidney support should be a priority in clinical care. Owners are encouraged to consult their veterinarians to choose the specific supplement that best fits their rabbit's needs.
