Dystocia in Marmosets
Dystocia (difficult birth) is a medical emergency that can occur in pregnant marmosets. It is a condition where the mother is unable to deliver her offspring naturally. Understanding the causes, signs, and treatment is crucial for owners to ensure the safety of both the mother and the infants.

Causes of Dystocia in Marmosets:
Fetal Size and Position: Marmosets often give birth to twins or triplets. If the fetus is too large or is in an abnormal position (malpresentation), it can get stuck in the birth canal.
Maternal Factors: These include a narrow pelvis (possibly from previous injuries or metabolic bone disease), uterine inertia (where the uterus stops contracting), or exhaustion of the mother.
Nutritional Deficiencies: Lack of calcium or vitamin D3 during pregnancy can lead to weak uterine contractions or skeletal issues.
Signs to Watch For:
The mother has been in labor (straining) for more than 2-3 hours without producing any offspring.
Visible exhaustion, lethargy, or weakness in the mother.
Presence of discharge (bloody or greenish) from the vagina without delivery.
Part of the fetus is visible but does not progress.
Diagnosis and Treatment:
When a marmoset is brought to the clinic with suspected dystocia, the veterinarian will typically perform the following:

Physical Examination: To assess the mother's overall health and hydration.
X-rays (Radiography): To determine the number, size, and orientation of the fetuses, and to check if the pelvic canal is wide enough.
Medical Management: If the condition is not critical, the vet may use medications like Oxytocin or Calcium to stimulate uterine contractions.
Surgical Intervention (C-Section): If medical management fails or if the fetuses are too large, an emergency Cesarean section is necessary to save the mother and potentially the infants.
Prevention:
Ensure a balanced diet rich in calcium and Vitamin D3 during pregnancy.
Provide a stress-free environment for the expectant mother.
Regular check-ups with an exotic pet veterinarian during the gestation period.
